On December 12, 2014, Southside Virginia Community College dedicated a plaque in the John H. Daniel Campus Library recognizing the late Gerald “Jerry” York Sparkman. His family donated his collection of War Books to the college to be displayed and used for years to come. Jerry worked as Director of Buildings and Grounds at the college for ten years along with his wife, Betty, who worked at SVCC for 13 years.

Southside Virginia Community College hosted the 8th Annual Law Enforcement Awards Banquet on Wednesday, November 19, 2014 at the John J. Cavan Workforce Development Center in Alberta. Area law enforcement agencies were invited to attend and honor one of their own as the recipient of the Officer of the Year Award for 2014. The event was hosted by Dr. Chad Patton, Dean of Instruction on the Christanna Campus. Ms. Francine C. Ecker, Director of the Department of Criminal Justice Services was the keynote speaker.

New members were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society Alpha Theta Chi Chapter on the Christanna Campus of Southside Virginia Community College on November 10, 2014. Membership is extended by invitation. To be considered for membership a student must be enrolled in a two-year college, have accumulated 12 semester credit hours, have established academic excellence as judged by faculty, and be of good moral character and possess recognized qualities of citizenship.
More than 400 job seekers converged with 35 employers at the SVCC Regional Job Fair held at the Southside Virginia Education Center in Emporia recently with a positive outcome.
