Nurse Aide Classes Coming To Emporia/Greensville

Southside Virginia Community College Workforce Development is offering Seven Week Nurse Aide Training at Southside Virginia Education Center 1300 Greensville County Circle Emporia, VA from June 13th, 2016—August 1, 2016.

Occupational objectives for this program include working as a CNA in health-related agencies including nursing homes and hospitals as well as home health positions acquired through placement agencies or private arrangements. There are many job opportunities in Southside Virginia for CNAs!

Governor's School Teacher Receives "Super Teacher" Award

There are some amazing teachers out there – Super Teachers, in fact, and many of them are right here in Virginia. Amy McClure is one of those teachers, and that’s why she was selected to receive the 2016 Virginia Lottery
Super Teacher award. Mrs. McClure received the award today in a surprise presentation at The Governor’s School of Southside Virginia in front of students, faculty and special guests.

SVCC Restructures in Response to Budget Reduction

In keeping with Southside Virginia Community College’s Strategic Plan for 2015 – 2021, the college is dedicated to making efficient and effective use of resources in order to serve the region as the leading provider of quality academic and workforce services. This, along with reductions in funding due to enrollment declines, necessitates a major restructuring and realignment of departments and personnel at the college.

Community College Philanthropists Honored with 2016 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy

The Virginia, Maryland & Delaware Association of Electric Cooperatives (VMDAEC) has earned the 2016 Chancellor’s Award for Leadership in Philanthropy. This organization was nominated to receive the award by Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC). The award was given at a luncheon ceremony at the Country Club of Virginia on Tuesday, April 19, 2016.

Phi Theta Kappa Inductees

New members were inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa International Honor Society Alpha Theta Chi Chapter on the Christanna Campus of Southside Virginia Community College recently.    Membership is extended by invitation. Southside Virginia Community College Offers Free Job Training Through EleVAte SNAP Employment & Training

Southside Virginia Community College is offering free career training to qualified recipients through Virginia’s NEW EleVAte SNAP Employment & Training Pilot project. The United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) provided funding for this project. The EleVAte SNAP E&T program is administered through the Virginia Department of Social Services (VDSS).

Recipients of SNAP (food assistance) may qualify for this free program, which provides training and support for participants interested in starting a new career. 

Access Is Nice, Success Is Best

Citizens of Virginia have many reasons to pursue higher education. Some want skills and knowledge. Others desire a better quality of life, enhanced respect, and greater self-confidence. Many seek increased career options and the associated financial gains. According to the State Council of Higher Education for Virginia (SCHEV), “On average, people with a college education earn nearly twice as much as those with only a high school diploma.”

Alumni Spotlight - Deanna Schwartz

Originally from Bristol, VA where she graduated from Virginia High School, Deanna Schwartz earned an Associate of Arts and Sciences in Education from Southside Virginia Community College. She then transferred to Randolph Macon Woman's College (now Randolph College), studied in England her junior year and received her Bachelor of Arts in English creative writing. She went on to attend Longwood University, completing a Master of Arts in English Literature.

New Employment & Training Program

On Wednesday, April 13th, Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) with its local partners, Brunswick County Department of Social Services, Charlotte County Department of Social Services, Greensville/Emporia Department of Social Services, Halifax County Department of Social Services, Nottoway County Department of Social Services and Prince Edward County Department of Social Services, will launch a new employment and training pilot program called EleVAte SNAP E&T to help residents who currently receive food assistance through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) to secure better jobs in high-demand fields.
