SVCC International Education Mission Statement
The SVCC International Education Program (IEP) encourages faculty and students to become globally astute by participating in web casting, study abroad, the Fulbright and VaCie VCCS International Exchange. The IEP is dedicated to providing an international experiential learning environment for students and faculty who want to think globally, and foster student learning in a community that teaches tolerance and the acceptance of different cultures, languages, races, religions, dress and ideology as well as increasing awareness of international competition, trade characteristics and foreign policies. The IEP awards various scholarships to qualified applicants.
SVCC Plans Europe Trip in 2010
Southside Virginia Community College will take a journey into Eastern Europe with stops in Hungary, Slovakia, Austria and the Czech Republic. This 11 day trip will showcase the best of each country. The group leaves from Raleigh/Durham Airport February 25, and return March 7, 2010.
 Our trip begins in Budapest, Hungary with visits to Castle Hill with its medieval buildings, the romantic concert hall- the Vigado and the Gresham Palace. There will be time to explore the city on our own or walk along the promenade of the Danube River which divides the city between Buda and Pest. (Budapest).
The next stop will be a one day visit to Bratislava (Pressburg), Slovakia the former capital of Hungary. In Bratislava, the group will visit unique shops and one or more castles.
From Slovakia, we travel to Vienna for a night at the symphony. Dressed in our Sunday best, we will sit back and enjoy an evening of timeless classical music performed by the Vienna Symphony. The Symphony will play music by Mozart, Strauss, Beethoven, Brahms and Schubert. That will be followed by two days of touring some of Austria’s historic sites such as Saint Stephan’s Cathedral, the Opera House, the Hofburg (Imperial Palace) home to the crown jewels, the Belvedere Palace with its 19th and 20th century art and the Schonbrunn Palace with its ornate apartments.
Before reaching the final destination (Prague, Czech Republic) the group will visit Cesky Krumlov, a very quaint village with its Gothic castle that dates back to the 13th century. While in Cesky Krumlov, the group will tour the Baroque theatre, one of the most well-preserved theatres of its kind.
In Prague, the group will visit the Staromestske Namesti Square, the Old Town Hall and the Church of St. Nicholas in the Little Quarter (Mala Strata) and Prague Castle, the largest castle in the world. During our free time, we will stroll through the enchanting cobbled streets and alleyways of Mala Strata and visit some of the quaint shops along the Vltava (Moldau) River.
