Information Literacy Graduate Testing Results -2005

 

 

SUMMARY

During the Spring of 2005, 275 Southside Virginia Community College students took the Information Literacy Competency Assessment Test.  Table 1 summarizes the overall results.  The average score for the college was 57.47 which indicates an advanced level of competency.  Those students graduating with an AA&S Degree had the highest average score as a group with 61.05.  The average score for all of the graduating groups indicates a high level of competence.  The interpretation of results is based on a VCCS guideline of a score of 39 is the cut-off for Proficient and 54 for Advanced.

PROGRAM RESULTS BY AWARD and CAMPUS

 

              Of the 275 graduates, 26 graduated with a Certificate.  As indicated in Table 2, 50% of the students scored advanced competence, 27.8% met the proficient competency level, and 11.5% did not meet the VCCS Competency for Information Literacy.  The program areas in which graduating students did not meet the VCCS standard competency level for information literacy were AST (1 out of 3, 33.3%), Clerical Studies (1 out of 1, 100%), and Substance Abuse Counseling (1 out of 1, 100%).

              Results by Campus are found in Table 4 and Table 5.  The average score of graduates on the Christanna Campus was 53.72 and the Daniel Campus graduating student average was 57.18.  Because of the small sample size no statistical analysis was made between the two campuses.

                            The two largest groups of graduates taking the Information Literacy Competency Assessment were the AA&S Degree recipients (85) and the AAS Degree recipients (159).  The overall results of the testing in the AA&S Degree group are shown in Table 7.  Of the 85 graduates taking the assessment, 67 or 78.8% demonstrated advanced competence, 14 or 16.5% tested proficient competence, and 4 or 4.7% tested below the VCCS competency standard for Information Literacy.  The programs in which the graduates scored below the VCCS competency standard for Information Literacy were General Studies ( 2 of the 18 or 11.1% taking the assessment scored below the standard) and Business Administration ( 2 of 8 or 25% taking the assessment scored below the standard).

                            Of the 159 students receiving an AAS Degree, 12 or 7.5% scored below the VCCS standard competence level, 68 or 42.8% scored at the proficient level of competence and 79 or 49.7% scored advanced competence (see Table 10 below).

                            Students graduating in 6 programs failed to meet the VCCS standard for Information Literacy: Human Services (5 out of 39 or 12.8% ), IST (2 out of 24 or 8.3%), CCD (1 out of 3 or 33%), Business Management (2 out of 21 or 9.5%), General Studies (3 out of 7 or 42.9%) and the one student who graduated in Upgrading Employment Skills did not meet the VCCS standard for Information Literacy.  A detailed breakdown by program and by campus of the AAS results  are found in Table 11 and Table 12 below.
