Information Literacy Graduate Testing Results -2004

SUMMARY

 

During the spring of 2004, 206 Southside Virginia Community College students took the Information Literacy Competency Assessment Test.  Table 1 summarizes the overall results.  The average score for the college was 59.32 which indicate an advanced level of competency.  Those students graduating with an AA&S Degree had the highest average score as a group with 61.75.  The average score for all of the graduating groups indicates an advanced level of competence. The guidelines for the interpretation of results are based on a VCCS guideline of 39 as the cut-off for Proficient, and 54 for Advanced.

PROGRAM RESULTS BY AWARD and CAMPUS

 

 

              The 206 graduates from Southside Virginia Community College well exceeded the % that scored Advanced for the VCCS in general as indicated in Table 2 below.

              Of the 206 graduates, 37 graduated with a Certificate.  As indicated in Table 2, 62.16% of the students scored advanced, 35.14% met the proficient level, and 2.7% did not meet the VCCS Competency for Information Literacy.  The program in which graduating students did not meet the VCCS standard competency level for information literacy was Clerical Studies (1 out of 3 or 33.3%).

              Results by Campus are found in Table 4 and Table 5.  The average score of graduates on the Christanna Campus was 59.10 and the Daniel Campus graduating student average was 58.46.  No statistical analysis was made between the two campuses.

              A total of 6 students graduated with a diploma. Three of the graduates (50%) scored proficient and 3 (50%) scored advanced in information literacy (see Table 6 and Table 7).

                            A total of 163 degree recipients took the Information Literacy Graduate Assessment Test.  The overall results of the testing in the AA&S Degree group are shown in Table 8.  Of the 39 graduates taking the assessment, 29 or 74.36% demonstrated advanced competence, 10 or 25.64% tested proficient, and none tested below the VCCS competency standard for Information Literacy.

                            Of the 124 students receiving an AAS Degree, 4 or 3.2% scored below the VCCS standard competence level, 36 or 29.03% scored at the proficient level of competence and 84 or 67.74% scored advanced (see Table 11 below).

                            Students graduating in 3 programs failed to meet the VCCS standard for Information Literacy: Business Management (1 out of 8 or 12.5%), ADJ (1 out of 12 or 8.3%), and AST (2 out of 6 or33%).  A detailed breakdown by program and by campus of the AAS results is found in Table 12 and Table 13 below.
