The Southside Virginia Community College mens basketball team, the three-time defending USA National Postgrad champions, won a pair of games over the weekend to even their record at 2-2 on the season.
After opening the campaign with lopsided losses against two NJCAA nationally ranked Top 5 teams in Louisburg College and Davidson County CC, the local team earned their first win of the season with a 103-94 victory over Stillwater Christian on Saturday.
The local team jumped out to a 12-4 lead early and took a 50-34 lead to the halftime break.
SVCC increased its lead to 73-54 midway through the second half and cruised down the stretch to the win.
Justin Williams led seven SVCC players in double figures with 20 points while Josh McClure scored 14 and Tyrone Thomas added 13.
Thomas finished with a season-high 22 rebounds and five blocks in the victory.
SVCC meanwhile blew a double-digit lead late against visiting Vance-Granville CC on Sunday after a 4-point play with 28 seconds to play tied the score at 104.
After a timeout, Treyvon Brandon scored on a driving layup with 14 seconds to play for SVCC and the local team got a stop on the Vanguards final possession to earn a 106-104 victory.
SVCC wing Michael Jackson had a huge game with 31 points to lead the local team while Williams scored 22 and Kamron Hughes added 12.
