The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team opened up a double-digit lead early in the second half and held on for a 93-82 win over visiting Washington Academy on Saturday afternoon.
The win was the eleventh in the past 13 games for SVCC, the two-time defending USA National Postgrad champions, and improved the local squad to 11-9 on the season.
The Panthers jumped out to an early lead getting a layup by Chris Jackson and a trey by Anthony Harris for an early 5-0 lead.
A bucket by JC Stewart and two straight hoops by Kirvell Alexander extended the lead to 17-10 at the 11:33 mark of the first half.
Na’Jawuan Davis came off the bench and hit two straight buckets late in the first half and SVCC took a 41-38 lead to the halftime break.
Harris completed a 3-point play early in the second half to give SVCC a 47-39 lead.
WA fought back and cut the deficit to two points but Harris scored on a driving layup and Stith hit a jumper to give SVCC a 64-58 lead at the 9:10 mark.
A two-handed dunk by Stewart in the final minute of play sealed the SVCC victory.
Harris was one of six SVCC players in double figures with 20 points and seven assists while Stewart scored 19 points and pulled down 18 rebounds while also adding six blocks.
Stith scored 18 points and added 10 assists while Alexander scored 13 points and pulled down 13 rebounds.
Davis tallied 13 points and six rebounds while Jackson added 10 points.
