On December 12, 2014, Southside Virginia Community College dedicated a plaque in the John H. Daniel Campus Library recognizing the late Gerald “Jerry” York Sparkman. His family donated his collection of War Books to the college to be displayed and used for years to come. Jerry worked as Director of Buildings and Grounds at the college for ten years along with his wife, Betty, who worked at SVCC for 13 years.
Jerry was a member of the Greatest Generation and his love of America will live on through his donation. He served in the U.S. Navy during WWII and later in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He and his wife, Betty, raised two daughters and a son, John, Anne and Susan.
Jerry was born on December 7, 1927, a date that would later live in infamy as the date of the Pearl Harbor Attack. He passed away on July 29, 2012.
Shown at the dedication (Left to Right) are Susan Frank, Dr. Linda Sheffield, Ryland Tuck and Anne Tuck.
