Small Town Girl Now Working At The Pentagon

“Just because you are from or live in a small town, this does not mean your chances and options are limited,” advises Brishauna J. Hawkins-Wesson. A native of Lawrenceville and graduate of Southside Virginia Community College, this small town girl now works as a Temporary Hire for the U.S. Department of Army Office of the Assistant Chief of Staff for Installation Management at Headquarters, U.S. Pentagon, in Arlington, Virginia.

Machining Skills Certification Program

Southside Virginia Community College (SVCC) offers an innovative Machining Skills Certification Program for soldiers that are transitioning out of the military.  This program was developed through collaboration among partners that include SVCC, Commonwealth Center for Advanced Manufacturing (C-CAM), Fort Lee Soldier for Life Program, Southern Virginia Higher Education Center (SVHEC), and Crater Regional Workforce Investment Board (Crater WIB).

Alumni Spotlight - Shantel Epps

Shantel Epps, born in New York City, began her journey at Southside Virginia Community College by earning her GED. She continued at SVCC, completing an Associate of Arts and Sciences Degree in General Studies/Human Services. While at SVCC, she was a member of Phi Theta Kappa (an honors society) and served as Vice President of the Empowered Women Club.

New Student Orientation

New Student Orientation sessions have started at SVCC. Additional sessions will take place on both main campuses of Southside Virginia Community College in August. New students, parents, and mentors are encouraged to attend an NSO closest to them!

Students Use Their STEM Skills

The John H. Daniel Campus of Southside Virginia Community College hosted approximately 20 students from Cumberland High School the week of June 27-30, 2016. Students utilized their STEM skills while stranded in the wilderness to build a model house and then to reflect upon the design process to actually construct a bamboo hut that would fit one teammate and withstand a windstorm.

New Student Orientation

The countdown is on to New Student Orientation! The Student Services Team is excited to offer our incoming students' orientation on each Main campus, which will take place on Wednesday, July 13th on the Christanna Campus and Friday, July 15th on the John H. Daniel Campus!
