Spring Women's Festival - Update
Southside Virginia Community College will hold its
24th annual Spring Women’s Festival on Saturday, March 6, 2010, on the
Christanna Campus in Alberta from 9:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.The event is being sponsored by the
Christanna Campus, Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center in South Hill, and
the Southside Virginia Education Center in Emporia.
The Spring Women’s Festival, a popular annual event, will
feature an extensive program offering 16 different
workshops. Each participant will
attend two workshop sessions while taking part in a delicious luncheon provided by Brian’s Steakhouse, a local
restaurant from South Hill, while enjoying a fashion show. Students from Shannon School of Dance, South
Hill, will perform dances throughout the fashion show.
The Spring Women’s Festival offers women a chance to get
away from home, socialize, learn a new craft, and have a relaxing, enjoyable
day,” said coordinator Rosa Hawkins.
There will be a variety of workshops to choose from that will be both
fun and informative....
A Taste of Japan, Makiko Malone
Participants will be
introduced to the culture of Japan using PowerPoint, pictures, clothing, and
food.Presenter will spend time
answering questions from participants.
Ballet Fit, Alicia Washburn
Workshop will
incorporate aspects of Pilates, Yoga, and Classical Ballet that will strengthen
the core, improve posture, and stretch and lengthen the muscles. All skill
levels are welcome to join this class in gaining a strong, flexible, and toned
body to promote good health and well being. Please wear comfortable clothes and
bare feet. Please bring yoga mat or large towel.
Belly Dancing 101(The Mysteries of Middle
Eastern Dance) ($5 Extra), Renee Huff
Learn sultry,
graceful dance steps used by Middle Eastern Dancers. Ladies, this workshop is FUN (for teens and
up)! Bring long scarves and dangling
jewelry. Teacher has a limited supply of
scarves and veils. Must wear socks and
flat shoes. Wear flowing, comfortable
clothes. Participants will play dress-up
and learn an authentic Harem dance routine.
Blue Bird Houses, ($20 extra), Donald and
Sara White
Participants will
learn the steps to building a birdhouse for blue birds, how to put them up, and
how to clean & care for their birdhouses. Each participant will receive a ready-made primed birdhouse (due to
limited time). Participants will paint
and get decorating ideas for the exterior of their birdhouse and will view a
variety of finished birdhouses for ideas.
Chocolate – Need I Say More, ($10 extra), Angela

Do you have a sweet
tooth? This is the workshop for
you!Learn the techniques of melting and
tempering chocolate delights such as chocolate dipped pretzels, chocolate
dipped strawberries, candy and brownies.
Computer Basics:What’s the 411?, LaDelta Williams
So what’s the 411 on
the information age? It seems like
everything has gone digital!In this
workshop, we will demonstrate how to open a basic e-mail account; search on the
web; create a photo album and send photos as attachments in e-mail; and general
information on computer basics.

Mary Kay, Handmade Beaded Jewelry, Stampin Up, Handmade Birdhouses, and Pocketbooks.
There will be a Massage Therapist on site to assist
participants with relieving stress. A sketch artist will be available to
provide participants with a free caricature to takehome.
Informative information will be provided by Wild Blue Travel Agency, the Brunswick Litter
Council, the Farm Bureau, the Master Gardens Club,4-H, Waste Management, and
Brunswick Tourism.
The registration fee is $25.00 per
person and includes a light breakfast, lunch, a fashion show, and Dance
Performances, not recommended for
children under age 12. Several of
the workshops require an additional fee, as participants will be able to take
items home or sample.
