SVCC Tennis Team Posts Win
SVCC beats cross town rival Saint Paul's in a thriller 5-2 and improves to 1-1 on the season
In the doubles action Conard Russell, Kayla Diaz, Tad Lewis, and Lee Lewis all got victories in their matches. #1 seeds Conard Russell and Tad Lewis started off the match with a commanding lead at 5-1. Saint Paul's tandem came back strong to take a 6-5 lead. Russell and Lewis then reeled off 3 straight games to take the win. In the other doubles match #2 seeds Kayla Diaz and Lee Lewis lead the entire way to win convincingly in the end.
In the singles action #1 seed Conard Russell started the match strong winning the opening set without dropping a game. While in the second set it seemed the exact opposite as Saint Paul's took a 4 to 0 lead. Russell was able to win 3 straight games to get back into the second set but it was not enough as Russell lost the second set. At one set a piece Russell and Saint Paul's went back and forth. Finally Saint Paul's had a slight edge in the end and stole the match away from Russell.
#2 seed Lee Lewis took out Saint Paul's with some difficulty in a straight sets win.
#3 seed Kayla Diaz was in for a fight in her match as she dropped the opening set in less than 20 minutes. Diaz fought hard in the second set and would not be denied winning the set in a tiebreaker. In the final set players traded blows back and forth. In the end they needed a third set tiebreaker to determine the winner. The match again went back and forth before Diaz hit a return winner down the line to secure the 2 sets to 1 victory. Diaz was on court for 2 hours and 15 minutes during this match up.
#4 seed Tad Lewis was in control at points it looked in his match but was not able to maintain it. The match was not able to be completed as mother nature began raining on their parade in the second set.
#5 seed Corey Gregory who cheered on the sidelines in the doubles was able to get some action in the singles. Gregory lead at many points during his match up. Both Gregory and Saint Paul's went back and forth but in the end Saint Paul's was too much winning 2 sets to 1.
