The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team won its third straight and sixth game of the past seven after topping Thomas Nelson CC 103-81 in a VCCS contest on Saturday afternoon.
SVCC, the three-time defending VCCS champions, improved to 7-5 overall and 1-0 in the conference with the victory.
The local team jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead on a lay-up by Trevor Williams and a trey by Tevin Holloway.
Holloway’s second trey of the first half gave SVCC a 20-19 lead and Edmund Maxwell followed with a 3-point play for a 23-20 lead.
Dashaun Coleman scored six straight points for SVCC late in the first half to give the local team a 43-40 lead at the halftime break.
Marcus Hoosier came out on fire in the second half scoring eight straight points for SVCC to give the local team a 54-51 lead at the 16:04 mark.
A bucket by Cordaro Boyd and another trey by Hoosier extended the SVCC lead to 70-62 at the 11:07 mark.
Two free-throws by Maxwell at the 5:03 mark gave SVCC a double-digit lead and the local team pulled away down the stretch.
Hoosier led all scorers with 33 points with 26 coming in the second half and also added six assists.
Williams finished with 17 points and 12 rebounds while Maxwell scored 16 points and added six assists.
Coleman also finished in double figures for SVCC with 12 points and five rebounds.
Dominique Simon led TNCC with 21 points.
SVCC will travel to Fredericksburg on Saturday for a VCCS tilt against Germanna Community College.
