Marcus Hoosier’s tip-in just before the final buzzer sounded allowed the Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team to outlast Mount Zion Academy Prep 106-104 in a road contest on Thursday night.
The victory was the eighth for SVCC in the past nine games and improved the local team to 9-5 on the season.
SVCC got off to a great start in the game jumping out to a 12-3 lead on Tevin Holloway’s second trey of the night at the 16:32 mark.
Buckets by Reggie Dennis and Donald Maxwell gave SVCC a 27-20 lead at the 7:33 mark of the first half but Mount Zion responded with a 22-12 run to take a 42-39 lead at the 2:10 mark.
A half-court trey by Dennis at the halftime buzzer trimmed the Mount Zion lead to 48-46.
A 3-point play by Marcus Hoosier and a dunk on a breakaway by Edmund Maxwell knotted the score at 67 at the 13:01 mark of the second half.
SVCC took a 91-86 lead at the 3:11 mark on a bucket by Hoosier.
Mount Zion hit a trey with 41 seconds left to knot the score at 104 and SVCC played for the last shot as Hoosier rebounded a missed shot by Maxwell and hit a tip-in at the buzzer for the game winner.
Hoosier scored 26 of his game-high 30 points in the second half after getting into early foul trouble.
He also added five assists and four steals.
Maxwell scored 21 points with 17 coming in the second half and dished out 10 assists while recording five steals.
Holloway finished with 13 points and three boards while Dennis scored 12 points and added four rebounds.
Cavan Bryant recorded eight rebounds and four blocks for SVCC while Cordaro Boyd tallied eight rebounds and added two blocks to go along with his eight points.
Trevor Williams scored nine points and added five rebounds for SVCC.
SVCC will return home on Saturday to face the Bryant & Stratton club team at 2 p.m. at Brunswick High School.
