SVCC tops Gators for Season Sweep

Smith Earns 200th Win

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team earned a season sweep over VCCS foe Thomas Nelson CC (Hampton) by picking up a hard fought 93-86 victory on Sunday afternoon.

The victory was the 12th in the last 14 games for SVCC and improved the local squad to 13-6 on the season.

Marcus HoosierThe win was a special one for SVCC head coach Dennis Smith who earned his 200th victory at the school in his 12th season.

“I have been fortunate to have some great coaches assist me throughout the years including Vincent Brown who has been with me for the last seven seasons,” said Smith. “We have also had some very talented young men. They are the ones responsible for this milestone victory.”

SVCC took its first lead of the game at the 11:59 mark of the first half on a trey by Tevin Holloway.

Reggie Dennis scored on a driving layup twenty seconds later to extend the SVCC lead to 21-17 but the Gators closed the first half on a 25-10 run to open up a 42-31 halftime lead.

The Thomas Nelson lead grew to 12 early in the second half but two straight buckets by Marcus Hoosier and a trey by Holloway cut the lead to 55-49 at the 14:07 mark.

The Gators increased their lead to eight but Hoosier scored on a breakaway dunk and Edmund Maxwell completed a 3-point play at the 7:05 mark to cut the lead to 76-71.

A rebound and putback by Trevor Williams and a tip-in by Hoosier gave SVCC its first lead of the second half at the 5:42 mark.

A long three by Anthony Harris gave SVCC an 84-80 lead at the 4:01 mark and SVCC went 8 for 8 at the charity stripe over the last 3:20 to seal the victory.

Hoosier had a huge game for SVCC with 34 points, 16 rebounds, eight assists and three steals.

Dennis scored 22 points and added seven rebounds and five steals in the victory while Maxwell scored 14 points and added six rebounds and six assists.

Williams finished with 11 rebounds and seven points for SVCC.

Dominique Simpson led TNCC with 22 points.
