SVCC Falls 101-100 in OT

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s basketball team put up a valiant fight but fell 101-100 to Sandhills (NC) CC in overtime on Saturday in the second day of the season-opening Coca-Cola Classic at Louisburg College. Sandhills CC, ranked ninth in the NJCAA D3 national poll, improved to 2-0 while SVCC fell to 0-2.

Marcus HoosierMarcus Hoosier (Petersburg HS) had a huge game for SVCC with 43 points, eight rebounds and three steals while Deshaun Coleman (Dinwiddie HS) tallied 17 points and grabbed five rebounds.

Reggie Dennis (Highland Springs) also finished in double figures with 10 points, nine rebounds and eight steals while Cavan Bryant (Randolph-Henry) added eight points, eight rebounds and six blocks in the game.

“We were disappointed not to pull out the win but we will look to build off of this effort,” said SVCC coach Dennis Smith. “Facing two teams ranked in the national polls is a tough way to open the season but we have some talented young men who will only get better as the season goes along.”

SVCC took a 26-18 lead at the 7:38 mark of the opening quarter on a bucket by Tevin Holloway (Hopewell) but Sandhills answered to take a 43-38 halftime lead.

SVCC trailed by as many as nine points midway through the second half but fought back to knot the score at 77 on a bucket by Dennis at the 4:44 mark.

Rashaun Alexander (Manchester) hit one of two free-throws with 12 seconds left in regulation to give SVCC a 90-88 lead but Sandhills scored on a rebound and putback to force overtime.

SVCC tied the score at 99 in overtime on a steal and layup by Dennis at the 1:09 mark and had a shot for the win but missed an open trey with five seconds remaining and could not get another shot up before the buzzer sounded.

The Panthers did not fare as well in their tourney opener falling 112-75 to Louisburg College, ranked seventh in the NJCCA D2 national poll.

Hoosier led SVCC with 25 points in that contest before leaving with cramps midway through the second half while Donald Maxwell (Petersburg) scored 13 and Anthony Harris (Dinwiddie) added 12.
