The Southside Virginia Community College basketball team captured a pair of wins over the weekend after topping Swish City Prep 86-79 at home on Sunday afternoon.
The win, coupled with a 108-104 victory over Mt. Zion Academy on Saturday, was the team’s fifth in the last six games.
The local team fell behind early to Swish City but rebounded behind a trey from Nelson Dews and a 3-point play from JC Stewart to take a 16-7 lead at the 12:20 mark of the first half.

A bucket by Stewart and two free-throws from Anthony Harris gave SVCC a 25-15 lead at the 8:31 mark.
Swish City closed the half on an 18-8 run to knot the score at 33 at the halftime break.
Harris buried a trey to open the second half scoring and SVCC opened up a 46-39 lead on back to back buckets by Chris Jackson and Kirvell Alexander.
Alexander buried a trey at the 4:02 mark for a 74-67 lead.
Swish City closed the deficit to a single point but Harris hit a trey at the 1:55 mark for a 79-75 lead and the local team held on for the victory.
Harris led SVCC with 23 points and three steals while Stewart scored 20 points and added 15 rebounds, six steals and five assists.
Alexander scored 15 points and added eight rebounds while Stith scored 12 points and added seven rebounds and five assists.
Jackson also finished in double figures with 11 points and seven rebounds.

The local team fell behind early but tied the score on three free-throws by Joe Daniel at the 9:40 mark of the first half.
Back to back buckets by Stewart gave SVCC a 37-33 lead at the 7:50 mark.
A layup by Alexander gave the local team a 39-36 lead at the 5:30 mark but Mt. Zion closed the half on an 18-10 run to take a 54-49 lead to the halftime break.
A dunk by Alexander at the 12:37 mark of the second half gave SVCC a 72-69 lead and the local team opened up an 81-71 lead on a bucket by Naquan Jordan at the 10:30 mark.
Mt. Zion fought back and cut the SVCC lead to two points but three straight buckets by Alexander extended the lead to 103-95 and the local team held on down the stretch for the win.
Stewart led SVCC with 31 points, 13 rebounds and seven blocks while Stith scored 22 points and added 10 assists. Alexander totaled 18 points, eight rebounds and five steals while Jackson scored 12 points and added 13 rebounds.
Daniel also finished in double figures with 10 points and four rebounds.
