From Amelia, Virginia and an Amelia County High School graduate, Kandy Freeman earned a Nurse Aide Certificate and her Associate of Applied Science in Human Services from Southside Virginia Community College.
After graduating from SVCC, Kandy transferred to Northwestern State University of Louisiana, completing a Bachelor of Science in Psychology. She is continuing her education, working on a Master's Degree in Mental Health Counseling from Capella University. Her future plans include becoming a Licensed Professional Counselor with her own practice.
Kandy is currently employed by Madeline's House Southside Center for Violence Prevention, Inc., a local domestic and sexual violence shelter, as it's Assistant Executive Director. She began her career at the shelter with an internship while a student at SVCC.
Taking from her experience, Kandy says "I strongly encourage students who are preparing for internships to take them seriously. Often, you may be able to obtain employment with that company. Also, you want to be able to learn as much as possible prior to entering the field."
