Community Encouraged to "Act on Poverty"

SVCC to play pivotal role

On Saturday,  July 18, 2009 from 10 a.m. – 12 p.m., Virginians will have a unique opportunity to pitch their solutions for reducing poverty in their localities and statewide.

Act on Poverty

In one of the largest-ever, simultaneous conversations devoted to the issue of poverty reduction, attendees are encouraged to recommend specific strategies for the Commonwealth’s Poverty Reduction Taskforce, and local and state officials to consider.  The Act on Poverty conversations will be held at local Virginia Community College System campuses.  Southside Virginia Community College in Keysville is hosting the event in the Workforce Development Center.

“SVCC is thrilled to be a part of this.  Many of our staff, faculty and administrators are in everyday contact with many of the most economically vulnerable people in our area.  It’s important that they attend, and our community leaders be there to hear them, and provide solutions of their own,” said Dr. John Cavan, SVCC President.

The Virginia Department of Social Services has been actively involved in the Act on Poverty initiative.

The event is free, and open to the public.  No advance registration is required.
