Hawkins Finds Success at SVCC Middle College

By Krystal Pollock

Keera Hawkins found success through Southside Virginia Community College’s Middle College Program. In April of 2008, she took the GED passing all parts except Math.  While retaking the GED in September, she felt confident and passed the final part rewarding her with the coveted GED.

Hawkins is from Alberta. Before living in Alberta, she and her family moved a lot. This made things difficult for Keera to graduate high school. She dropped out of Petersburg High School in the eleventh grade and Hawkins felt the only option left was to come to SVCC to receive her GED. Keera is not the first in her family to receive a GED; her brother also received his and now works with his grandfather.

Hawkins worked with Buffy Allgood at SVCC and she really appreciates all that Allgood did for her. She liked the attention and the one-on-one experience from the teachers, which is not like her experience at her other schools. Keera says she would recommend the Middle College Program to others.

Hawkins plans to take classes at SVCC to obtain a Computer Information Certificate. Afterwards, she plans to transfer to ITT Tech to continue her education.
