Swine Flu Information
The Virginia Department of Health has confirmed positive cases of the swine flu in the Commonwealth and has declared a "public health emergency."
The head of the Virginia Department of Health says students are at a 'higher risk' than the general population. Officials at Southside Virginia Community Colege are monitoring the situation and the community college system has a plan in place should the situation escalate. SVCC Vice President Peter Hunt says it is especially important for everyone to wash hands frequently and to cover up when coughing or sneezing. "We have placed dispensers with hand sanitizers in the hallways and restrooms for their use," he says.
The Health Department and the Virginia Community College System continue to closely monitor the Swine-origin Influenza A (H1N1) Virus Infection (swine flu) outbreak to keep us informed of this rapidly evolving public health issue.

What You Can Do to Stay Healthy
- Stay informed. The websites above will be updated regularly as information becomes available.
- Influenza is thought to spread mainly person-to-person through coughing or sneezing of infected people.
- Take everyday actions to stay healthy.

- Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
