Cage Honored For Expanding Opportunities
 JoAnn Cage, Director of Perkins, Tech Prep and Career Pathways at Southside Virginia Community College, recently received an Expanding Opportunities Award for innovation in workforce development in career pathways at the 2009 Hire Education Conference Luncheon held at The Homestead.
In outlining her accomplishments for the nomination the presentation read “During her tenure at SVCC, Cage has transformed a Tech Prep program into the college and community hub for career pathways. As the lead for Perkins, Tech Prep and Commonwealth Scholars Programs, Cage leads the strategic planning for all career pathways initiatives and related grants including those for adult career pathways.
She has also lead the SVCC efforts to drive certification and licensure attainment by faculty and students, organizing and funding MOS certification of students enrolled in SVCC CTE programs and assisting 10 faculty to earn certifications in areas such as welding and IT.”
Another innovative SVCC initiative is “Your Next Big Step,” a college based training event for high school seniors that provides them with training and specialized assistance in personal finance, career planning, college and financial aid applications, and job seeking skills (as well as enrolling all participants in Virginia’s Education Wizard).
