SVCC men post 3 wins; unbeaten at home

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s intercollegiate basketball team remained undefeated at home by posting three wins this week.

SVCC Defeats Germanna, 118-68

SVCC posted a 118-68 win over Germanna Community College (Fredericksburg) at Brunswick High School on Sunday afternoon.

The win was one of three on the week for SVCC to improve them to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the VCCS East Division.

The two home wins over the weekend also pushed SVCC’s home winning streak to 36 straight games over the past four seasons.

“Our team is really starting to gel,” said SVCC men’s coach Dennis Smith. “We won a hard-fought game in Roanoke on Thursday night and our young men played extremely well in both games at home over the weekend.”

SVCC jumped out to a 5-0 lead Sunday on Brandon Williams’ trey at the 18:50 mark.

Back-to-back buckets by Jack Browne extended the SVCC lead to 16-5 at the 14:19 mark.

SVCC then went on a 31-9 run to take a 47-16 lead on Williams’ trey at the 4:25 mark.

SVCC took a 60-24 lead to the halftime break.

Brandon Williams (Clover Hill HS) and Eric Dubose (Warwick HS) led SVCC with 20 points apiece in the contest while Jack Browne (Community Christian) scored 15 and Eric Wulff (Kenston-Forest) added 14.

Michael Johnson (Park View HS) also finished in double figures with 10 points for SVCC in the win.

SVCC Defeats Thomas Nelson, 112-83

SVCC jumped out to a 49-36 halftime lead and cruised to a 112-83 win over Thomas Nelson Community College (Hampton) on Saturday afternoon to avenge an earlier season loss this season.

Antron Fowlkes (Prince Edward HS) had a tremendous first half scoring 22 points to key SVCC to the big lead.

Fowlkes led SVCC with 29 points in the game while Eric Dubose scored 21 and Jack Browne and Dwayne Cypress (Park View HS) added 18 points apiece.

SVCC defeats Roanoke College JV, 88-72

SVCC downed the Roanoke College JV’s 88-72 in a non-conference contest on Thursday night in Roanoke.

SVCC jumped out to a 44-39 first half lead behind 19 first half points from Jack Browne.

SVCC opened up a 15-point lead midway through the second half and cruised to the big win.

Browne led all scorers with 32 points in the game while Dubose scored 17 and Eric Wulff and Fowlkes added 10 points apiece.

At VWCC

SVCC will hit the road Saturday for a 3 p.m. contest at Virginia Western Community College in Roanoke.
