SVCC Evens basketball record with win

The Southside Virginia Community College men’s intercollegiate basketball team evened its record to 3-3 on the season with a 94-83 win over Virginia Western Community College (Roanoke) on Saturday afternoon.

The win improved SVCC to 2-1 in VCCS play and ran its home regular-season winning streak to 34 games over the past four seasons.

SVCC fell behind 39-35 in the first half but rallied in the second half behind five treys from Jack Browne to open up a double-digit lead with six minutes remaining.

Virginia Western cut the SVCC lead to six points with a minute left to play but the home team hit 5 of 6 from the charity stripe over the last minute to seal the win.

Browne led SVCC with 36 points in the game while A. J. Fowlkes scored 23 and Roger Lassiter added 12.

Michael Johnson also finished in double figures with 10 points for SVCC.

Sharron Scott led Virginia Western with 26 points while Latrell Smith added 23.

At Home this weekend (January 17 & 18)

The SVCC men will play host to a pair of VCCS games this weekend welcoming Thomas Nelson CC (Hampton) on Saturday for a 3 p.m. start and entertaining Germanna CC (Fredericksburg) on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Brunswick High School in Lawrenceville [Schedule].

SVCC will travel to Roanoke College on Thursday night for a non-conference contest.

The SVCC women will also be at home this weekend playing Thomas Nelson CC before the men’s game on Saturday and entertaining Northern Virginia CC after the men’s game on Sunday afternoon [Schedule].

Admission is free to all SVCC home games.
