Alumni Spotlight: Janice King

SVCC ALumni Spotlight

Janice King grew up in the small town of Weldon, NC.  After graduating from Weldon High School in 1981, she had no immediate desire to further her education. She moved to Virginia in and was employed by a local sewing factory. Then, after 10 years the job, it was relocated overseas. Janice KingJanice saw this as a great opportunity to return to school. She enrolled in Southside Virginia Community College’s Information Systems Technology program.

After completing the first year of the IST program, Janice started work at Peebles Corporate Office, where her classes came in handy. Then it happened again…this time after 13 years on the job. The office was merged with the office in Houston, Texas. Not wanting to move away, she seized her second chance to return to school. She transferred to the Medical Office Specialist specialization of the Administrative Support Technology program. She earned her Associate of Applied Science degree and began her current position as a follow-up representative in the billing office at VCU/Community Memorial Healthcenter in May 2014.

“SVCC really helped to prepare me for this position, and my education has helped with the duties of my new job. If I could do this at my age, anyone can. Please don’t wait as long as I did to realize that an education is one of the best and most rewarding things in life”.

Janice also works part-time at Lake Country Advanced Knowledge Center.
