SVCC Alumni Spotlight

Mr. LipscombDavid Lipscomb grew up in Mecklenburg County and graduated from Bluestone Senior High School before attending Southside Virginia Community College. He earned two degrees from SVCC: an Associate of Applied Science in Drafting and Designing and an Associate of Applied Science in Electronics.

After graduating from SVCC, David transferred to Old Dominion University and completed a Bachelor of Science in Electrical Engineering Technology. Once he completed his B.S. at ODU, he returned to Southside Virginia and began working as an electrical engineer with Mecklenburg Electric Cooperative (MEC). Since being hired by MEC 27 years ago, David has moved up in the organization to become its VP of District Services, heading up its three district offices, then to his current position as VP of Member and Energy Services.

"A huge advantage of attending SVCC was the reduction in living cost and the opportunity to rely on the existing support network of family and friends. In many ways the training opportunities I received at SVCC provided a tremendous advantage...I learned things that had solidly prepared me for my time at ODU, in many cases, better than students from other locations. The small class sizes gave instructors and professors the advantage of learning more about their students and their abilities and gave a student great individual attention."

David is married with two children and continues to live in Mecklenburg County in the town of South Hill, where he enjoys working with youth as a coach, past president and current board member of a community soccer association. He is also active volunteering for a Boy Scout Troop and in his local church.
