SVCC - NOT YOUR AVERAGE COMMUNITY COLLEGE

Southside Virginia Community College participates in the Community College Survey of Student Engagement (CCSSE) every two years. CCSSE’s survey instrument, The Community College Student Report, provides information on student engagement, a key indicator of learning and, therefore, of the quality of community colleges. The survey, administered to community college students, asks questions that assess institutional practices and student behaviors that are correlated highly with student learning and student retention. Results from over 200 colleges were compiled in 2008 to establish national benchmarks in 5 key areas; active and collaborative learning, student effort, academic challenge, student-faculty interaction, and support for learners. 

The 2008 results have just been published and SVCC scored higher than the national norm in all 5 benchmarks! SVCC did exceptionally well in the support for learners category. The report also showed that SVCC students received more financial support, had more interaction with faculty, and received more career counseling than the norm for community colleges across America. This is just more proof that SVCC is not your average community college!
