SVCC’s President attends SEUS/Japan Conference

Dr. John J. Cavan, President of Southside Virginia Community College, joined Virginia Governor Timothy M. Kaine and the state’s delegation to the 32nd Southeast U.S/Japan Dr. John Cavan
Annual Joint Meeting held in Raleigh, North Carolina October 18 – 21, 2008.  As many as 500 business and government leaders from Japan and the southeastern U.S. attended the conference designed to build relationships with key international leaders across a wide spectrum of business and industry. 

             

Created in 1976, the Southeast US/Japan Association was established to promote trade, investment, understanding and friendship between Japan and member states of the southeast.  The states include Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia with delegates from both the public and private sector.             

Among the speakers at the event were Yasuo Hayashi, Chairman and CEO of JETRO, Pulitzer Prize Winning Journalist Walker Mears, Shigeru Hayakawa, Managing Officer, Toyota Motor Company, Hiroyuki Ino, Executive Vice President, Tokyo Electric Power Company, Inc. and Taizo Nishimuro, former CEO of Toshiba Corporation.  Another highlight of the event was a trip to a closed, moderated practice session with Mike ‘Coach K’ Kryzewski and the Duke Men’s Basketball Team.  Also, Takayoshi Hanagata, President and CEO of Canon Virginia, represented the state on the panel discussing corporate investment.

Dr. Cavan has served as president of SVCC for more than 25 years.
