On January 16, 2014, there was a brief lockdown period at the John H. Daniel Campus of Southside Virginia Community College in Keysville. A firearms safety instructor was seen carrying a gun on campus and the sighting was mistaken as a threat. There was never a threat to anyone on campus and the situation was managed quickly.
All precautionary measures set by the Threat Assessment Policy were followed.

Cavan prepares to retire as SVCC’s president in July 2014, the College and the Virginia Community College System will conduct a nationwide search for his replacement.
