BB&T Bus Visits SVCC

The BB&T Bank traveling bus and financial center visited the campus of Southside Virginia Community College in Alberta this week. Representatives were available to meet with students to answer financial questions. Shown outside the bus are Loris Starke of Emporia, bus driver Shane Johnson of Winston-Salem, and Penny Tollerson of South Hill.

Bookstore Dates and Times to Remember

The new Southside Virginia Community College Bookstore, under the management of the Follett Corporation, has set new bookstore hours beginning September 16th.  Book buy back dates for the Fall 2014 semester have been set as well and noted below, so mark those calendars!

New Bookstore Hours Beginning September 16th:   Open Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 4:00 pm

Student Activities Update

It's time for another year of exciting activities and opportunities to get involved on campus. Attached below, you will find a copy of the Student Activities Calendars for each main campus. In addition, please look at the application for a new program called Student Ambassadors! This is yet another way to show your Panther Pride!  Please take advantage of any of these FREE opportunities on either campus (Keysville or Alberta) of Southside Virginia Community College.

Southside Student Selected to Attend Leadership Institute

Southside Virginia Community College student Monica McMillan has been selected to attend the 2014 Student Veterans of America Leadership Institute in Bentonville, Arkansas. She was one of 125 student veteran leaders from across the country selected to attend this program.     

The 2014 SVA Leadership Institute will be held at the Wal-Mart Headquarters in Bentonville, AR. This all-expenses paid, multi-day training seminar will bring a select number of up-and-coming chapter leaders together for a unique professional development opportunity.        

Education Secretary Visits SVCC

Virginia Secretary of Education Anne Holton visited the John H. Daniel Campus on July 29th to tour the new Student Services & Learning Resource Center. Secretary Holton also had a round table discussion with college administrators and staff.

SVCC Represented at "Student Voices" session

The Student Veterans of America Organization at Southside Virginia Community College attended the "Student Voices Session" with U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan on July 22nd at the Department of Education headquarters. The topic of the meeting was to focus on “The 8 Keys to Veterans' Success”, which is a voluntary initiative through the Departments of Education and Veterans Affairs.

Fewer than 10 schools nationwide were invited to participate in this event.  The SVCC group had the opportunity and privilege to represent community college students across our nation.

SVCC Instructors Receive 2013-2014 Virginia Career and Technical Education Creating Excellence Award

Southside Virginia Community College instructors, Clint Johnson and Ronnie Cole, received the 2013-2014 Virginia Career and Technical Education Creating Excellence Award for CTE Postsecondary Programs. Johnson and Cole received the award for their work on the "Integrated Robohand Project".
