Southside Virginia Community Chorus
Category: SVCC Events
Date: April 27, 2014 - 19:00

Music is at the core of the human spirit. The Southside Virginia Community Chorus (SVCC) is celebrating this gift by offering their spring concert on Sunday, April 27, 2014 at 7:00 PM at South Hill Presbyterian Church in South Hill (Free).

How better to express this spirit, than with our African American musical heritage! Joyful, expressive, and soulful selections are found in this concert program: from “Soon-ah Will Be Done” by Wm. L. Dawson to “True Light” by Keith Hampton and “Give Me Jesus” by Hal Hopson. Included, with a variety of other tunes, will be a medley from the musical, “The Sound of Music” by Rodgers and Hammerstein II- to be performed this year on the stage at the Colonial Theater. The SVCC concert will feature instrumentalist, Dee Pinnell (piccolo and flute) and, Sally Tharrington (piano), accompanist and soloist.

Directed successfully for many years by Judy Kemp, the SVCC chorus has delighted audiences with their warm and gracious concerts. This concert is directed by Carol J. Henderson of Buffalo Junction. Carol directs the Lake Country Chorale, Inc. in Clarksville and is active in the lake area with other creative and musical interests. Her background is in Piano, Organ and Sacred Music. She is serving as Organist/Director at St. John’s Episcopal Church in Halifax and is part-time office assistant at Watkins Cooper Lyon Funeral Home. Born into the Carl Becker family of string makers in Chicago, IL, she holds a B. M. and M. M. from Westminster Choir College, Princeton, NJ.

Come and hear your neighbors and friends sing great American music together. Carol and the SVCC chorus invite you to “Feel the Spirit!” on April 27th!

Career Readiness Certificate Testing
Category: Seminars - Workshops - Workforce Development
Date: April 24, 2014 - 01:00

Get Work Ready By Earning Your CRC – Career Readiness Certificate

Virginia’s Career Readiness Certificate helps employers by certifying that a recipient possesses core skills in applied math, reading for information, and locating information — skills that are required by at least 85% of all jobs profiled by ACT Workkeys in the country.

Why CRC?

There is great concern in the private sector about the gap that exists between the skills required in today’s workplace and those exhibited by potential and incumbent employees. Businesses have trouble finding and hiring people who have basic employable skills and who are therefore trainable for specific jobs. The Career Readiness Certificate is a portable skills credential, assuring employers that a job applicant actually has the basic skills they seek.
