Requirements

Students taking distance education courses can go to the Alberta or Keysville campus or to one of our five extension center locations to use the computer labs. Please refer to our college homepage for information about open lab times.

Students planning to use thier own personal computers need to make sure the following requirements are met:

 

Skill Requirements:

Students taking an Internet class should

  • be familiar with Microsoft Office applications (create and save documents)
  • be able to send and receive e-mail (including attachments)
  • be able to perform basic Internet searches (LEARN THE NET)
  • Take the READI online assessment
 

Hardware Requirements:
PC MAC
  • Windows 2000, XP, or Vista
  • 128 MB of RAM or higher if running XP; 1 GB of RAM if running VISTA
  • 1 GHz Pentium Processor
  • 56K modem (minimum); Any high-speed connection is recommended (Ex. Cable Modem or DSL)
  • Reliable Internet Service Provider; Wireless PCs/laptops and ISP providers using a satellite connection can cause problems during testing within Blackboard.  Wireless and satellite connections can experience interruptions.
  • Internet Explorer 6.0 or higher; Firefox 2 or higher (Recommended)
  • OS 10.4 or Higher Processer Recommended
  • 512 MB of RAM or higher
  • PowerMac G3 or higher
  • 56K modem (minimum); Any high-speed connection is recommended (Ex. Cable Modem or DSL)

  • Safari 2 or higher; FIrefox 2 or higher

Software Requirements:  The links provided below will take you away from the SVCC website.

  • Microsoft Office is required. The college uses Microsoft Office 2007. If you are using an older version of Microsoft Office, such as Office 2003, you can download a compatibility pack which will allow you to view Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files created in Office 2007.  Users of the Microsoft Office XP and 2003 programs Word, Excel, or PowerPoint—please install all High-Priority updates from Microsoft Update before downloading the Compatibility Pack.

          If you do not have Microsoft Office, you will need to download viewers in     

          order to view class information. Click below to download the necessary viewer:

            MS Viewers   (There is a different viewer for each MS Office program.)

           Check your version of JAVA and if needed download update.

                   

         

Individual instructors will specify if additional software is required

for their course, which may include printers, speakers, headsets, etc.

Virus protection is a must! The VCCS supplies free virus protection

software for download. The FREE Symantec AntiVirus Corporate Edition can be downloaded from your Blackboard homepage.
